Unique to NATRC is that competitors receive both horse and rider
scorecards at the end of the ride rating their performance by the
veterinary and horsemanship judges. It’s like having a two-day
veterinary exam and a riding lesson for one low price. What better way
is there than to get an opinion on your trail and horse care abilities
from your peers – other accomplished horsemen – along with suggestions
for improvement?
But wait, there is more. You will learn from the folks you meet at
rides about such things as pacing yourself and your horse, use of
electrolytes, hoof care and shoeing, conditioning techniques, riding
light (to make your horse’s job as easy as possible), taking your
horse’s metabolics and what they mean, tack fit and what people have
found works best for them, taking your horse’s pulse and respiration and
how to recognize the signs that your horse may be stressed.
You will pick up these hints, tips and tidbits of knowledge while riding
along with other competitors on the trail, reading judges’ comments on
the cards, sitting in and participating in campfire conversations,
standing in line for vet checks and during pre-ride briefings. In other
words, during your whole time at a ride, you will be in a friendly, fun
environment for learning. Even the folks who look like they have been
around forever are still learning and, you will learn from your equine
partner. Ride with us and discover how the two of you can work and play
as a team!
It is a great way to build a partnership with your horse through
training, conditioning and education. You and your horse will build
trust and confidence in each other and in yourselves, whether you take
home ribbons or not!
It is also fun to realize you have learned something new. Most riders
who come to this sport have many years of horse care and riding
experience. However, many find they and their horse learn new skills.
It is always fun to improve!
If you've never done a CTR before, don't be intimidated? If
you just tell ride management it's your first ride, you'll be
flabbergasted at how helpful everyone will be! All you need to do is ask,
and you'll get all the help you need and then some. |
